I come into the presence of still water. 鈥 “The Peace of Wild Things”听
Wendell Berry became for many the voice of one who understands the beauty we all seek in the world. His poetry speaks to the joy to be had in the gift of nature God has given us, especially when we make the effort to silence the busy-ness of our lives. As an agrarian, Berry embraced toiling on the land, his honest effort producing not an easy life but a worthwhile one. His poetry reflects that choice, to take a concerted interest in the land that produced his food, that sheltered his family, that connected him to his community.听
Berry鈥檚 life reminds us that a meaningful life does not have to be a hurried or spectacular one. He found richness in the ordinary: in tending the soil, walking through the woods, working with his hands, raising a family, writing, and remaining faithful to the place he called home. He challenged the assumption that progress always means moving faster or farther away from where we began. Instead, he encouraged us to pay attention鈥攖o know a place deeply, to care for it, and to understand that our choices are connected to the lives of others.听
Perhaps this is one of Berry鈥檚 most enduring gifts. He invites us to recover the habit of noticing. In a world filled with noise and distraction, he reminds us of the wisdom found in stillness: the quiet of water, the rhythm of seasons, the work of the earth, and the companionship of people who share a place with us. His writing asks us to consider what it means not simply to pass through the world, but to belong to it and to take responsibility for the places and communities entrusted to us.听
For those of us who teach and learn together, Berry鈥檚 example offers a quiet invitation: slow down. Pay attention. Know the place where you are. Be grateful for the gifts that surround you. Know the place you are going and who will be waiting for you. And, in whatever small ways we can, leave the world more cared for than we found it.听
Berry will be remembered not only for the beauty of his words but also for the integrity with which he lived them. May we also be reminded of something we already know but too easily forget: there is great wisdom in learning to be still, to belong, and to care.听
